A Passion for Senior Care Born from Experience
The inspiration for Door to Door & More Senior Care came from my own lived experience. In 2009, my father, a 4th generation dairy farmer in Caledon, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 85. At the time, I was living and working in downtown Toronto, and, in order to help accommodate my parents' changing needs, I spent almost every weekend, along with a short Leave of Absence from work, back at the farm helping my parents. As my dad’s illness progressed, it became clear that my parents needed more support than my time allowed. In 2011, I left my job in Toronto and moved back to the farm for good.
I accepted a part-time evening position teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) to adults (mostly seniors) for the school board in Guelph, and, during the day, I essentially became my parents' Personal Assistant: driving them to medical appointments, accompanying them into their appointments and taking notes, helping them negotiate confusing hallways and corridors of hospitals and doctor’s offices, scheduling appointments, filling prescriptions, liaising with an array of medical professionals, administering medications, helping with grocery shopping or doing it for them, driving my mom to her hair appointments, helping her with personal shopping and other errands, doing the banking, helping with cooking, household cleaning and organizing, maintaining the property, and, as my dad’s illness progressed, helping my mom with round-the-clock care-giving for my dad.
It was a lot, and it was hard.
As all this was happening, I asked myself over and over, what do seniors do if they don’t have children, or if their family isn't available to help out? What would my parents do?
Likewise, what do the children of seniors do when they already have too much on their plates - demanding full-time jobs, inflexible schedules, children of their own to raise, are too far away, and their aging parents need help?
And herein lies the problem: at some point, aging seniors will likely need support. Adult working children will not always be able to help. What then? Who will fill that gap?
Door to Door & More Senior Care was created specifically to be a solution to this problem, and to fill this gap.

Here are a few statistics:
- 90% of Canadians want to age at home.
- By 2030, almost 1 in 4 Canadians will be 65 years of age or older.
- Centenarians (those 100 years and older) are the fastest growing age group in the country.
- Caregivers, primarily adult children aged 45-64 looking after one or both aging parents reported in a 2013 study that they experienced a negative impact to their physical and mental health, their ability to participate in the labour force, their personal finances, and the time available for other activities. Moreover, the demand to care for aging parents will continue to grow.
- “The Canadian population will increase dramatically in age over the next 20 years, showing a significant increase in the demand for accessible transportation. Adjustments will have to be made to infrastructures and related services to compensate." (Transport Canada: Outlook, Trends and Future Issues)
